Spray Foam Insulation in Highland, IL Attic Kneewall

A kneewall space is created when a finished room is built within a sloped roof. Often, these walls are "insulated" using fiberglass batting. Since fiberglass does not stop air flow, the insulation does next to nothing to air seal and insulate----causing rooms sharing walls with kneewalls to be very uncomfortable. Dr. Energy Saver St. Louis air sealed and insulated this Highland, IL homeowner’s knee wall with spray foam insulation. Now, inside air can't get out of the house through the kneewall spaces, and outside air can’t get in. This bedroom is comfortable again!

The detail between the foundation wall, the sill plate, the rim joist, and the sub flooring allows for significant air leakage from the outside...especially when pipe wire penetrations are added. It is also this rim joist area that is often poorly insulated. Even when your rim joist is insulated with fiberglass bats, the outside air will still leak in through the bats, because this form of insulation acts as a filter. Spraying expanding foam insulation on the inside surface of the rim joist, to cover the sill plate down to the top of the basement wall, not only seals all air leaks very effectively, but it insulates as well.

Air leaks cause drafts, which are sources of discomfort and signs of energy loss. This Glen Carbon, Illinois home had a massive hole from pipe penetrations below a recently-added bathroom, creating a large air leak. Dr. Energy Saver air sealed the opening with spray foam insulation to stop the air flow.

Home Made More Energy Efficient in Collinsville, IL

Lori H.’s Collinsville, IL home was uncomfortable. During hot summer months, it was difficult to keep her home cool. She had the same issue in the cold winter months and drafts made the situation even worse. She was paying higher energy bills due to the extra heating and cooling so she called Woods Basement Systems for a free energy audit. Design Specialist Peter N. inspected the home and recommended air sealing and insulating the attic.

Woods sealed areas of the attic where air typically escapes such as the rim joists, wiring penetrations, gaps in windows and doors and other holes or cracks. They use a two part spray foam that expands and hardens to prevent air from escaping and make the home more energy efficient.

Wood blew in cellulose insulation throughout the attic to blanket it in a thick insulating layer. Cellulose insulation is made of recycled newspaper that would have gone to a landfill. It’s treated with a natural boric acid solution that makes it resistant to fire and mold and deters insects. It has a high R-value which is the measure of a material’s resistance to the passage of heat. When blown cellulose insulation is installed in combination with air sealing, it can cut energy bills up to 40%.

Lori H.’s home is now much more comfortable and she’s thrilled that upgrading her attic’s insulation will end up paying for itself in the money she saves on her energy bills.
